The Dark Side of Motivation: Why do we need Motivation?

Before going to the depth of the dark side of the motivation, first we need to know the actual definition or the meaning of motivation; from both the sides our thinking or Myth to Science. Read till the end because half knowledge is sometimes harmful.
Definition:
According to our thinking: Motivation is a general inspiration process that to do those things which they hope will satisfy these drives and desires and induce the subordinates to act in a desired manner. As a result Motivation is the trigger for activating the urge to full filling the desire.

According to Science - The word we use Motivation is derived from the Latin term motivus (“a moving cause”), which suggests the activating properties of the processes involved in psychological motivation. Which means forces acting either on or within a person to initiate behavior.
The Types of Motivation:
1. Extrinsic
Doing an activity to attain or avoid a separate outcome. According to research published in Contemporary Educational Psychology, “Extrinsic motivation is a construct that pertains whenever an activity is done in order to attain some separable outcome.”
2. Intrinsic
An internal drive for success or sense of purpose. The journal of Contemporary Educational Psychology defines intrinsic motivation as doing “an activity for its inherent satisfaction rather than for some separable consequence. When intrinsically motivated, a person is moved to act for the fun or challenge entailed rather than because of external products, pressures, or rewards.”
3. Family
Motivated by the desire to provide for your loved ones. A new study published in the Academy of Management Journal looked at a group of factory workers whose jobs entailed performing the same mundane task day after day, without any rewards for good performance. You’d think in the absence of both an intrinsic and extrinsic motivator, the workers would have little incentive to work hard in their roles. But what the researchers found was that some people who lack both kinds of motivation are still spurred on by a third factor called “family motivation.”
This three types of motivation classified into two Groups: Internal Motivation and External Motivation.
The Internal Motivation : Internal motivational are the feelings, values, and goals that drive you. They create the feeling of satisfaction when you’ve accomplished a goal, and the feeling of frustration when you sense you’re underperforming. They come from your internal desire to better yourself and gain mastery within your field.
The External motivation: External motivation are factors outside of a person’s control that drive them to perform well. Some equate these forces to “pressure.” However, while these forces do create a degree of pressure, they shouldn’t be viewed as negative.
The reaction occur in your body:

One of the key chemical hormones released during motivation is dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is associated with feelings of pleasure and reward. When individuals are motivated, dopamine is released in the brain, which can lead to feelings of happiness and satisfaction. This can have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing, as individuals feel a sense of accomplishment and pride in their achievements.
Another chemical hormone released during motivation is norepinephrine. Norepinephrine is a stress hormone that is released in response to challenging situations. When individuals are motivated, norepinephrine is released in the brain, which can help to increase focus, attention, and alertness. This can have a positive impact on productivity, as individuals are able to stay focused and work efficiently towards their goals.

Finally, cortisol is a chemical hormone that is released during motivation. Cortisol is a stress hormone that is released in response to stressful situations. This pressure can lead to feelings of anxiety, self-doubt, and even depression, as individuals struggle to meet their own expectations and the expectations of others.

Motivation can also lead to feelings of unhappiness. When individuals are constantly striving towards a goal, they may become so focused on the end result that they forget to enjoy the journey. This can lead to a sense of dissatisfaction and unhappiness, as individuals feel like they are constantly chasing something that is just out of reach. Additionally, when individuals become too focused on external sources of motivation, they may lose touch with their own internal sense of purpose and fulfillment, leading to a lack of happiness and satisfaction in their lives.
